PARA PUPS
British ‘para pups’ were trained in World War Ⅱ to parachute out of planes so they could accompany airborne and SAS units – but they weren’t the first to do so. In 1785, a French balloonist used his dog to test out his idea for a parachute, dropping him several hundred feet. The parachute worked – but on reaching the ground the dog, probably sensibly enough in the circumstances, decided not to hang round to find out what would happen next, and ran off never to be seen again.

HOLISTIC DOG CARE
Just as dogs have benefited from the availability of many of the latest treatments for humans, an increasing interest in holistic care has led to a number of these therapies also being employed or adapted from human usage especially for animals. Little is known about how some of these therapies work, although many owners nevertheless report positive experiences – but as not all animals respond in the same way to all treatments, different options may need to be explored. Some treatments are also more suitable for certain ailments, or their use may be contra – indicated by particular health problems. Because of this, as well as for legal reasons and to ensure that unnecessary suffering is not caused through misdiagnosis or inappropriate or incorrectly administered treatment, owners should either consult a vet who specialises in holistic medicine, or ask for referral to a qualified practitioner. Some treatments can legally only be carried out by a veterinary surgeon; and all reputable practitioners should in any case refuse to treat your pet unless it has first been seen by a vet and you have obtained a referral.
